had to do with the theft of the candidates signs on front yards and other public places. It was reported that at least 500 Bush/Cheney signs were stolen or vandalized
across several states and about 250 of the Kerry/Edwards signs experienced the same things (Bzdek, 2004). These are included in the category of dirty tricks and it would have been
something organized by local candidate headquarters or by individuals, but the candidates themselves may have had nothing to do with these thefts. This was something new, at least in terms
of scale and volume (Bzdek, 2004). Of course, there were smear campaigns against both candidates. This isnt new, it has happened historically in elections. In fact, Grover Cleveland lost the
election in 1888 because of a smear issue (Bzdek, 2004). As for the 2004 election, political analysts suggests that thinks "the dirty campaigning is a result of polarized, dug-in parties
