Western organizations were initially influenced by ancient military structures, which were highly authoritarian and then, by the scientific management theories of the early 1900s (Autry 1996). A functional structure, also
called a vertical structure, is one that is organized by function, e.g., marketing, finance, legal, research and development, production, personnel, and so on (Price 2006). In other words, it divides
the organization into major functions with a head manager for each function. The advantage of this style is that it is simple, there are clear lines of responsibility and authority,
which makes it easy to understand (Price 2006). Employees can chart a career path (Price 2006). The disadvantage of this style is that managers must be careful not to cross
over into another managers territory (Price 2006). Further, conflict may easily emerge because communication does not flow freely between functional divisions (Price 2006). The divisional organization is divided into self-contained
units who act almost like independent small enterprises (Price 2006). One advantage of this model is the development of team spirit within each division and each division can respond more
quickly to environmental changes (Price 2006). One disadvantage is the duplication of tasks between units, which is not cost-effective (Price 2006). Geographical structures are designed within geographic regions (Schwerzler
2004). The location of each unit allows the organization to respond to local needs (Schwerzler, 2004). Also, because the unit is located in a local region, consumers perceive them as
