As an organization grows bigger, of course, its organizational structure enlarges as well (Robbins, 2004). The challenge in any organization is finding the appropriate degree and types of
vertical and horizontal differentiation and integration. Organizations are structured in a variety of ways according to the intent of the organization. The
most typically expectation in organizational structure is vertical. Staff is organized in a vertical hierarchy with management at the top of the hierarchy and workers at the bottom.
Horizontal structure, in contrast, is put in place on the basis of goals rather than on supervisory rank. In a horizontally structured organization a supervisor might actually be working
right alongside one that he supervises. Typically, however, most organizations have some degree of both vertical and horizontal organization. Consider, for example, a multi-department organization. While each
department also has a hierarchal organization in terms of supervisors and staff, that organization is more easily viewed as lateral since each department is also part of the vertical hierarchy
that is in play in the organization over all. In effect this is a matrix. Matrix organizations combine the best features of vertical organization with the best features
of horizontal organization. In theory, organizational structure could be said to be directly related to organization efficiency and productivity. There are
