Pneumonia vaccines have been widely available for years, and their usefulness is beyond question. It appears that most of the attention on pneumonia vaccines in current literature focuses on cost effectiveness. Ament, Fedson and Christie (2001) report on several studies and make observations on the findings of several others. The researchers state that most studies have been made under the assumption that "vaccination is equally effective in preventing bacteremic (BPP) and nonbacteremic (NBPP) pneumonia" (Ament, Fedson and Christie, 2001; p. 2078), but that their study indicates that the vaccinations still are cost effective when preventing BPP alone, without considering the vaccinations effect on NBPP. Disadvantages The pneumonia vaccine is less effective in the frail elderly than in healthy, young adults (Ament, Fedson and Christie, 2001). As many as half of the elderly receiving the vaccine gain little or no benefit from the effort. Even though the vaccine itself is highly cost effective, the process of securing, administering and marketing the availability of the vaccine can be costly. Reduced effectiveness in the elderly population increases that cost. 2. Ways in which Quality Improvement initiative improve organizational performance. ...
