that most police departments approaches to stress reduction and stress management are centered on the individual. Though certainly the individual is the primary consideration, Finn (1997) observes that quite
often departmental characteristics can in themselves contribute to maintaining internal stress levels higher than they need to be. The solution, according to Finn (1997), is to address both individual
and departmental approaches to stress management. Individual police officers can take steps to both manage and reduce stress. One site advises, "Understand
that rest is not spare time. It must be scheduled regularly" (A Word to Workaholics, n.d.). This is likely the single most effective defense against stress in that adequate
rest equips the individual with the ability to practice clearer perception of conditions and circumstances. Other advice from the same author includes maintaining a spiritual life at a high
level; periodically reviewing the choice for police work; simplifying material surroundings and possessions; and simplifying personal life (A Word to Workaholics, n.d.). Finn
(1997) encourages administrators to be proactive in identifying stressors within the organization and taking steps to eliminate those that can be eliminated and mitigate those that cannot be eliminated from
daily routine. Organizational approaches should include identifying sources of stress and then working either to eliminate or alter circumstances. As example, negative publicity can be a source of
stress for the individual, but it can be altered only at the organizational level. Countering "routine" negative publicity with community service programs, interactive meetings with childrens or adult citizens
groups and other community outreach activities can provide a wealth of positive publicity that balances the negative and engenders a more positive public view of the local police. Question 2
