used to answer these questions is to use Porters work to determine the specific types of strategies used to gain a competitive advantage and thus, to become a leader in
the market. Wal-Mart is clearly a leader. Wal-Mart is the worlds largest retailer, in fact, it is larger than its three greatest competitors, Carrefour, Royal Ahold, and Metro AG
put together (Biesada 2006). Wal-Mart has 6,300 stores, which includes 1,200 discount stores, 2000 SuperWal-Marts (these stock groceries), and 565 Sams Clubs (warehouse stores) (Biesada 2006). Two-thirds of the stores
are in the United States (Biesada 2006). Wal-Mart a majority stake in Seiyu Co., Ltd., a Japanese company (Biesada 2006). It is also the largest retailer in both Canada
and Mexico (Biesada 2006). Wal-Marts leadership in the industry is based on low cost. The store also has sales but they focus on offering the lowest price for the items
they stock. The company can win in the low cost strategy because it orders in massive quantities, something every vendor wants. The company is so large that it can negotiate
far better prices with its vendors than can other companies. They have also instituted many different innovations to reduce costs. Even their marketing strategies stress the low cost - smiley
faces jumping around cutting prices. It is cost that marks Wal-Marts organizational leadership strategies. Organizational Leadership Densten and Gray (2003) comment there is significant debate about what
