Organizational development has evolved over the decades as the environment has changed. At one time, organizational strategies could be planned for the long-term but that is no longer the case. Because change occurs so rapidly today, even the definition of organizational development has changed. Years ago, organizational development was defined to include the elements of planned efforts throughout the organization to increase effectiveness and productivity. The basis for knowledge came from the behavioral sciences. There are a number of definitions for organizational development today. They all include the ability to manage change. It is a system-wide application of behavioral science knowledge that plans strategies that will increase and enhance performance (McNamara, 2010). The organization today is viewed as multiple systems that exist and perform within the organizational system (McNamara, 2010). It is thus a complex system and it is an open system wherein it responds to external drivers as well as internal drivers. Change is a key activity in todays organization. Interventions to improve the organization include strategic planning in all aspects of the organization. For instance, the organization as a whole is involved in strategic planning but so is the human resource department, the IT department and so on. All planning and actions are intended to accomplish the organizations mission and goals. Organizational development is about leadership and management, it is about change and individual performance as well as the organizations performance as an entity (McNamara, 2010).
