Businesses are organizations that are comprised of people with common interests and purposes, e.g., employees receive income and the business earns a profit. This essay is concerned with businesses as organizations. Daft (2009, p. 7) writes that organizations face different challenges today than in the past. This can be said of any era but it is a fact that the world has been changing at unprecedented rates over the last few decades. Managers and organizations face increasing globalization, more intense competition, advancing and ever-changing technology, more diverse workforces and the need to adapt and change quickly (Daft 2009, p. 7). These are just some of the challenges organizations face today. Organization design is defined as a "formal, guided process for integrating the people, information and technology of an organization" (Autry 1996). The design of any organization must complement the organizations purpose (Roberts 2004, p. 32; Autry 1996). The organization must also be designed so as to be successful in the marketplace. As the marketplace becomes more complex, the design and subsequent structure of the organization will change. A number of new forms of organizations have emerged with the emergence of new technologies as well as the emergence of globalization. Simons (2005, p. 17) said that the organizational design must insure accountability. Because of this, some aspects of the design of the organization are designed by senior management (Simons 2005, p. 18). Organizational designs encompass traits much as each person has traits in their personality. The degree of specialization needed for the tasks completed in the organization is one trait (Daft 2009, p. 17). The hierarchy of authority is another trait that refers to the span of control.
