firm and G. L Gore & Associates, best know as the producer of GORE-TEX work in different industries, and despite both being international, they have very different organizational structures and
design. Both companies can be seen as successful, with well known names and profitable operations which are expanding. In order to understand the differences in the design of the structures
we can look at the way in which they may vary. Mintzberg (et al, 2003) looks at the component parts of an organization and
argues that the structure is made up of 6 component parts; the strategic apex; the middle line; the operating core; the techno-structure, the support staff and the ideology/culture. Some of
these parts may be more dominant than other, for example in smaller companies the techno structure may not be a dominant as the culture. These different sections then need to
be coordinated so that they will all work neatly together and add value, without co-ordination chaos may rule. Mintzberg also argued that there were six main methods of coordinating the
components of structure, which together will indicate the design of an organization (Mintzberg et al, 2003). These coordinating methodologies include direct supervision; mutual adjustment; standardization of work, standardization of knowledge/skill;
standardization of output and standardization of norms. It is unlikely that in any give situation only one co-ordination method will be used. Normally a combination
will be employed with differing degrees of emphasis. The type of organization will help to determine what parts of the organization are dominant and the most used co-ordination method. These
