The last few years at Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB) have been trying at best. IPO champion Frank Quattrone joined the company in 1998; his criminal trial began
in 2001 (Himelstein, 2003). Former CEO John Mack arrived to repair the damage and redirect CSFB, only to be forced out in 2004. Successor Brady Dougan seeks to
return CSFB to its former power and influence minus the Quattrone-era criminal activity (Guerrera, 2004). Theme Choice The theme here is culture, change
and structure; the purpose is to assess CSFB in each, using several models. The choices of ethics and power were rejected for CSFB for several reasons. The trial
and conviction of investment banker Frank Quattrone are still quite fresh, coloring any discussion of ethics at CSFB. Quattrone is appealing his conviction, but in the meantime he also
is barred from the securities industry for life (Himelstein, 2003). Power also was rejected in that CSFB currently carries very little in its industry. Data Collection
The researcher began with current and informative articles on CSFB, discovering the progression of Quattrones downfall and subsequent IPO investigations; John Macks brief but effective tenure
as CEO; and the installation of Brady Dougal as the most recent CEO. Without direct experience in the industry or in the organization, the writers pronouncements following are highly
subjective and largely statements of opinion rather than fact. They are based, however, on the facts, data and impressions gained from reading accounts of the companys recent history.
