Organizational culture affects all aspects of an organizations function. Culture, in turn, is impacted by a number of aspects of organizational structure. Prevalent among these are factors such as size and environment. In general, as an organization grows bigger its organizational structure enlarges as well (Robbins, 2004). As the environment in which the organization becomes more complex, so does organizational structure (Robbins, 2004). As the technology utilized by an organization becomes more complex, so does organizational structure (Robbins, 2004). At the heart of these observations, however, is the organizational culture which exists within the organization. These correlations between size, environment, technology and organizational size can vary significantly in recognition of organizational culture (Robbins, 2004). Other factors affecting that culture include outside factors such as market competitors. These points can no better be illustrated than by just a brief look at the airline manufacturing industry. Boeing, Airbus, and Sematech all provide interesting examples of organizational culture and how it can vary. There are many competitors in the airline manufacturing industry. Their presence affects the organizational culture of those companies with which they compete. In theory, organizational structure could be said to be directly related to organization efficiency and productivity. There are notable differences, however, between the organic, mechanistic, and organizational structures (Robbins, 2004). While the organic structure is a free-form structure which evolves in accordance with need, the organizational structure is often rigid and designed around such factors as supervisory hierarchy.
