My experiences are vastly different than yours.] Organizational culture is the sum total of how people behave in the organization; it is the unwritten assumptions of the organization, the expectations, and the values and norms that act as the foundation for the organizations operations (McNamara, 2007). This author refers to culture as the organizations personality (McNamara, 2007). As such, it is something that can be sensed more readily than it can be described concretely (McNamara, 2007). The culture is like a framework that is shared by all members of the organization and it guides their behaviors and thoughts (SOI, 2005; Aiman-Smith, 2004). Edgar Schein, who has done a great deal of work and study in the concept of organizational culture said that it is a "pattern of shared basic assumptions that the group learned" (SOI, 2005). These assumptions are generated through experiences the group has in solving problems and handling challenges (SOI, 2005). Those processes and approaches that were successful become the core of the culture. They become the correct way to do things because they have been shown to be valid and effective (SOI, 2005). Organizations grow and evolve over time and as they do so, they are faced with two specific issues concerning their culture (SOI, 2005). The first is how to integrate new members into the culture and the second is how to adapt the culture to respond to external forces in such a way that the organization can survive (SOI, 2005). Gareth Morgan, another expert in this field, says that the culture is a living phenomenon (SOI, 2005). Theorists have identified a number of elements that might be included in the organizational culture (SOI, 2005).
