Concepts Informal and Formal Communication There are two primary types of communication in organizations, formal and informal. Formal communication includes things like memos, e-mail, procedural manuals, personnel manuals, and so
on while informal communication is unofficial and takes place among employees. Formal communication is official and occurs within a structure with rules (Altinoz, 2009). Organizations and institutions themselves take
on a formal or informal structure. Formal structures live by a set of rules, behaviors, written contracts, and practices that guide everyone. Informal structures are guided by beliefs, norms, practices,
cultures, and social networks. Informal structures should be supporting the formal structures (Prell et al., 2010). The type of social structure influences how employee think and act. Research
suggests that formal organizations shape opinions and beliefs of those who work there. The formal communication processes direct employees to adopt the corporate goals and mission as well as values
and beliefs (Prell et al., 2010). Within these formal structures, informal structures are established, creating social networks. Individuals in the organization who are similar in their values and beliefs will
tend to become friends, thus, forming a social bond (Prell et al., 2010). Over time, these folks will influence each others opinions and beliefs. They will also share knowledge,
information, and rumors. Social networks are more able to share implicit or tacit knowledge than other networks. They have built up an understanding of what they are each saying. Social
