Inc. , September 2010 properly! The goal of supportive communication is to develop and reinforce positive relationships
between the people communicating with each other. It also intends to deal with the problem that is the focus of the communication interaction. Supportive communication is not for the purpose
of having people like you or to increase your own reputations as a nice person. It is also not for the purpose of gaining social acceptance or social status. It
is to help the other person deal with a problem or concern. Supportive communication must be congruent. That means that both the spoken words and the unspoken, nonverbal messages must
match. For instance, telling another person you are not angry but your face is hard-set. That is an incongruence. Another kind of incongruence happens when a person does not even
know what they are really feeling. They may not be aware that they are really angry, for instance (Talukder and Khan, 2009). One challenge with supportive communication, then, is
being congruent. Another challenge is to not be judgmental. This is not easy. Talukder and Khan (2009) explain this kind of communication needs to be descriptive rather than judgmental or
evaluative. When a situation is very emotional, it is for a manager to just tell an employee they did something wrong. This kind of statement is not going to help
the employee do it right. Instead, managers need to focus on the issue and implement their problem solving skills to fix the situation (Talukder and Khan, 2009). This is a
