communication, societal standards, socialization and even culture and cultural relativism all provde a basis for understanding communication, both through verbal and non-verbal messages. The importance of societal standards
and society in general and regulating and defining the process of communication must be recognized as an indicator of both mode and intent of communications, especially in the organizational setting.
As a result, it is necessary to recognized variations in the social culture in which individuals are raised in order to understand the process of communication and the impacts
of communication in defining organizational communications. Relating this view through an assessment of the current literature supports the premise of the value of understanding concepts like cultural relativism.
Multicultural Perspectives Both Tovey (1997) and Lopez (1991) considered the issue of multicultural identification and the transcultural communications that occur in the organizational setting. In developing an understanding
of their arguments, both of these theorists relate to the conceptual view of relativism as it defines cultural identity. The conceptual basis for the construction of self is defined
by a view of relativism, which has been applied both in support for and in opposition of unity and tolerance among people of different cultures, and underscores the important issues
for individuals of foreign cultures. Individuals have maintained that cultural relativism supports the notion that an individuals communications reflect those of a culture, and therefore supports the use of
racial or cultural stereotyping that leads to generalized intolerance. In contrast, it has been argued that cultural relativism can be utilized to maintain positive perspectives, including the belief that
