in general can be defined as the "study and application of knowledge about how people, individuals, and groups act in organizations" (Organizational behavior, 2008). The study takes a "system approach"; i.e., it interprets the relationship between people and organizations "in terms of the whole person, whole group, whole organization, and whole social system," seeking to build better relationships by achieving human, social and organizational objectives (Organizational behavior, 2008). Obviously then, organizational behavior is a very wide-ranging field, encompassing such things as leadership, change, human behavior and other factors (Organizational behavior, 2008). Organizational behavior also refers to the "style" of management, which is one of four types: autocratic, custodial, supportive or collegial (Organizational behavior, 2008). An autocratic model puts all the power in the hands of the manager; the employees are "oriented towards obedience and dependence on the boss" (Organizational behavior, 2008). Performance in this environment is minimal (Organizational behavior, 208). The custodial model is based on "economic resources with a managerial orientation of money. The employees ... are oriented towards security and benefits and dependence on the organization" and performance is characterized by "passive cooperation" (Organizational behavior, 2008). The supportive model is just that: management is supportive of employees; the employees "are oriented towards job performance and participation" and this model results in "awakened drives" on the employees part (Organizational behavior, 2008). Finally, a collegial model suggests a partnership, with the employees oriented toward "responsible behavior and self-discipline" (Organizational behavior, 2008). The resulting performance is one of "moderate enthusiasm" (Organizational behavior, 2008). An organization that wants to succeed and have enthusiastic employees and reduce its turnover will probably employ the supportive model.
