to each person. Motivation is the driver that causes us to act, to be what we are. Judge and Robbins (date) asserts there are three elements in motivation: "intensity, direction,
and persistence" (p. 186). In other words, how hard a person tries, where the effort is directed and how long the person will continue to try, to make a real
effort to accomplish the goal (Judge and Robbins, DATE). There are numerous theories regarding motivation, some of the best known are reinforcement theory, Maslows Hierarchy of Needs, McGregors Theory
X and Theory Y, McClellands Theory of Needs, Vrooms expectancy theory and Cognitive Evaluation Theory. Reinforcement theory continues to be the most utilized in terms of practice. It is a
system that is based on rewards and incentives for performance. Individuals choose to act in certain ways in order to achieve an outcome (Kotze, 2004). Why individuals choose one
behavior over another has to do with their motivation (Kotze, 2004). The choice is made based on what outcome the individual wants at that moment (Kotze, 2004). Each of the
theories mentioned attempts to answer that question. Vrooms expectancy theory says that an individuals momentary goal may be just the means to achieving a second level outcome, which is the
real goal (Kotze, 2004). Vroom suggests that the individual is motivated to choose one behavior over another because "he or she has a strong desire for a certain task outcome
and a reasonable expectation of achieving that outcome. . . and because he or she also expects that the achievement of the task outcome will result in reward in terms
