This paper examines a hypothetical case in which a student failed to deal successfully with the normal human resistance to change. Observations and Reflections Here the student will have to supply an incident from their own experience; it might be something like the following: A small manufacturing company has decided to switch to a computer inventory system, and the manager calls a meeting to explain the process, only to meet with unexpected resistance from the shop manager. He insists that his system of hand-written cards is good enough for the small amount of product in the shop; he is also reluctant to spend the money on a computer system and the additional training that accompanies it; he is also wary of learning to use it. The meeting ends at an impasse, with the overall manager backing down and allowing the current system to stay in place. This report explains why its important to encourage the shop manager to accept the new system, as well as why he may be resisting; it will consider some of the issues from a psychological viewpoint. Casual Analysis The most appropriate tool for analysis in this case is psychological, because we want to get to the root of the managers resistance to change. That resistance is rooted in his psychological makeup. The key here is not really his objection to the cost of the new system and the training; it is his fear of new technology, and deeper than that, his fear that his job is at stake (Michelman, 2004).
