Planning is about what the company is going to do and how they are going to do it. A key activity in planning is decision-making (Allen and Gilmore, 2009). 2. Organizing. In this function, the manager is making preparations for implementing the plan. Decisions include who will do what and when they will do it. This is about the hierarchy of the organization, i.e., this establishes the organizational structure that will allow employees to perform (Allen and Gilmore, 2009). 3. Staffing. It is crucial to hire the right people for the right jobs. This function also includes monitoring performance and establishing strategies to retain talented employees (Allen and Gilmore, 2009). 4. Leading. Some authors refer to this function as directing. It is about influencing others to work towards the organizations goals and includes motivating employees to be productive (Allen and Gilmore, 2009). 5. Controlling. This is not about being a dictator, it is about controlling things like the budget, assuring standards are met, and, in general, controlling variables that will lead to the achievement of goals as they are identified in the plan (Allen and Gilmore, 2009).
