properly! Chapter 1: Thanks for 24 years of service..... Russ McDonald faced the same challenge as tens of thousands of other employees at all levels when he was forced into early retirement. Downsizing left many unable to find a job for numerous reasons. Prospective employers were wary of hiring McDonald at a much lower salary than he had been earning because they felt that he would "jump ship" as soon as he was offered a higher paying job. That was a reasonable fear for these employers. Employee turnover disrupts productivity, the environment and the flow of the companys business. Turnover is very costly to the company on a number of levels. In fact, a Harris study concluded that it costs up to $50,000 to replace a typical worker (Barnack, 1997). Despite the potential for McDonald leaving the company, as a small business owner, I would hire McDonald. There are a number of reasons for my decision, the first of which is that the man is a professional with extensive knowledge, skill and experience. My reasoning includes the fact that if he stayed for even six or eight months, he would offer sufficient benefits to the company to offset the cost of replacing him. Furthermore, there is always the possibility that McDonald would enjoy working for a company where his job was more secure, even if it was at a lower salary.
