As is the case with virtually everything else, planning the Organizational Assessment and Diagnosis will have a direct effect on the outcome of the project. The purpose
here is to discuss the ethical considerations of the project; beginning steps; and who to approach for permission. Ethical Considerations Because the goal
of the project is to assess the organization, then the focus of the assessment must remain on the organization and not on the individuals contained within it. Organizational diagnosis
will emerge from surveys of and interviews with individuals, but it must be made free from bias, either on the part of the researcher or those included in the assessment.
Senior management also must be assured that the assessment and diagnosis will not make any "corporate secrets" accessible to the outside world, particularly
to the companys competitors. Those who form corporate strategy must be comfortable with sharing that strategy and its underlying rationale with an outsider. First Steps
Among the first steps for the project are researching public information regarding the organizations public face; gaining a "feel" for the company and the general attitude within
its facilities; and gaining access to those who will provide access to deeper levels of the company. Public information includes any Securities and
Exchange Commission (SEC) filings that the company has made, as well as a review of news stories or recent appearances in news magazines (ex. Time), business magazines (ex. Business Week)
