considerations into day to day health care practices. An area where these considerations are particularly complex is organ transplantation. The large number of individuals that need transplants couples
with the small number of organs that become available to present a situation in demand of distributive justice. Certain rules must be abided by if the allocation of scarce
resources like organs is fair. In the past, however, a handful of individuals have stepped outside these rules and acquired organs in complete disregard for transplant protocol. One
such individual is Todd Krampitz of Houston Texas. Krampitzs case illustrates the desperation that characterizes those in need of transplants. It also emphasizes the importance for well defined
rules and procedures in terms of organ allocation. In 2004 Todd Krampitz was diagnosed with advanced liver cancer and found himself in desperate
need of a liver transplant. Several thousand other individuals, however, had found themselves in a similar situation previous to Krampitz (Robertson, 2005). As was protocol in organ transplant,
these individuals were waiting their turn to receive the much needed liver. Krampitz, however, decided not to wait. He rented billboard space, placed classified ads, appeared on talk
radio and television shows to bring his situation into the public consciousness (Robertson, 2005). He did so specifically so his chances of receiving a liver would be bettered.
It is difficult to criticize Krampitz given he was a desperate man, a man that had only a limited time to live
if he did not receive the much needed transplant. The harsh realities, however, were that there were many more desperate men and women out there that needed a liver
