15 and 19 years reside in this county (Erie County, 2005). The ethnic mix of the county includes whites, African American, Native Americans, Asian Indians, Hispanics, Chinese, Filipinos, Japanese, Koreans,
Vietnamese and others (Erie County, 2005). High school student between grades 9 and 12 are listed by the U.S. Census Bureau as numbering 55,023 (Erie County, 2005). In order to
discern the nature of general attitudinal patterns regarding organ donation, looking at the demographic elements of age and educational level, Minniefield (2002) investigated a typical northeastern urban African American community
located in Buffalo, New York, Erie County. The participants of the survey consisted of 173 African Americans and among this sample group knowledge of organ donation was high, with
88 percent of the participants expressing familiarity with the concept (Minniefield, 2002). The 25 to 35 years olds expressed the greatest familiarity and educational levels were evaluated as a factor
that significantly predicted whether or not a participant would agree to become a donor (Minniefield, 2002). The 18 to 24 years olds had the highest rating in regards to family
discussion of this topic (Minniefield, 2002). A significant factor regarding whether or not the respondents would agree to be donors was that the fear that they would not receive proper
medical attention if they were identified as organ donors (Minniefield, 2002). One hundred percent of the 25 to 35 years olds expressed this belief (Minniefield, 2002). Seventy percent of the
18 to 24 years olds said that they believed that their organs would go to a select group of people rather than those who really needed them (Minniefield, 2002).
These findings suggest that there are numerous erroneous beliefs in the Erie County population, particularly among young people, that can be corrected and addressed through an educational intervention. Furthermore,
