As this indicates, the most pressing issue pertaining to organ donation is the huge disparity between the number of people who are waiting for an organ transplant, which holds the possibility of restoring their health and prolonging life, and the supply of healthy, compatible organs (Courtney and Maxwell, 2008). The ethical and legal issues that surround organ donation hinge on how to increase donation while also acknowledging and being faithful to the inherent rights and autonomy of potential donors. Ethical Issues The study conducted by Boland and Baker (2010), which focused on the attitudes of female college students toward organ donation, found that, overall, their attitudes were positive. The students who were organ donors indicated that they were motivated by altruism and that the idea of receiving financial compensation for an organ donation did not interest them. Nevertheless, this idea has been proposed and is one of the many ethical issues associated with organ donation. In the US, the National Organ Transplants Act (NOTA), which was passed in 1984, prohibits any manner of financial gain that results from organ donation (Schweda and Schicktanz, 2009).
