Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 6 page paper describing Dorothy Orem’s model of self care, followed by a discussion of the model’s advantages and disadvantages. In this age of cost containment effort, self-care carries the promise of reducing the cost of direct patient care in those settings in which it can be used. Some of these situations include diabetic testing, wound care, or self-catheterization at home, among others. Though cost savings can be great, perhaps the greatest advantage is the psychological benefit that the individual gains from having some measure of control over his own illness and its management, which can equate to better patient outcomes. community. Combining these psychological perspectives with the practicalities of managed care has resulted in a significant increase in the numbers of people performing self-care at home. Much of
that activity is undertaken within the framework of the Orem Self-Care Model. Orems Self-Care Model Models and Theories of Nursing quotes Polit &
Hendersons definition of the Orem model as being the "practice of activities that individuals initiate and perform on their own behalf in maintaining life, health, and well-being." Of course
this is not to be taken to mean that the nurse provides little direct care, but that the patient is allowed to take on greater responsibility for themselves. Its
effect is to reduce the atmosphere of paternalism that has pervaded medicine. This reflects the primary Orem theory of self care. The
