A 16 page paper discussing the ways that the concept of self-care has changed over the years, particularly as it relates to Orem's self-care theory. Psychologically, it has been found that individuals more actively involved with their own health care often fare much better than those dependent on and at the mercy of the medical community. Combining these psychological perspectives with the practicalities of managed care has resulted in a significant increase in the numbers of people performing self-care at home. hospital stay decreased to three days more than 20 years ago. We ruefully joke that some managed care plans only allow new mothers to be hospitalized on a "drive
through" basis, lingering only long enough to complete the process of giving birth. At the other end of the life cycle, our population is aging as people live much
longer lives than in former times. These increasing numbers of elderly individuals increasingly are expected to provide much of the supportive activities associated with their own health care.
