James Kirby Martins Ordinary Courage is an interesting and perceptive account
of the social history of the revolutionary war, which focuses on the lives of ordinary soldiers who fought in the conflict and the social and economic impact of the war
on their lives. He looks in particular at the reasons why men joined the army, their lives and prospects prior to the war, the way in which they were treated
both during and after their term of service and the way that this affected their subsequent civilian life. His major concern is with the Continentals, troops who were encouraged or
forced to enlist under what later turned out to be false pretences in the sense that the government later refused to fulfil its contractual obligations to these men after they
had completed their service for the benefit of others.
After 1776, for example, the definition of what constituted suitable material for an enlisted man was considerably broadened from the previous standards. In New Jersey, exemptions were
granted to those who owned slaves and indentured servants, and were willing to enrol them in the army, and Maryland encouraged the conscription of vagrants. Consequently, a great number of
