The acquisition of oral language requires the integration of a number of elements, including modeling, expressive and interactive language experiences, and adaptation to language structures. Strategies to provide instruction to support oral and emergent language development should reflect the benefits of integrating environmental components to enhance phonemic awareness for the instruction of oral and emergent language. The Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC)relates the importance of relating how children learn and develop to the creation of opportunities for learning in the classroom. For early childhood learners, the integration of instructional opportunities that are based on social learning and the environmental context are important to both personal and language development (INTASC Principle 2). INTASC Principle 3 also relates to language formation by recognizing the importance of addressing the learning needs of diverse learners, and Principle 7 supports instruction that shows a knowledge of students and the community in which they are raised. National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) (2009) determined the need to separate early childhood content from older children in the learning environment and focused on language in early childhood as a means of supporting both inclusion in the learning environment and diversity across cultures. The Arizona Professional Teacher Standards (APTS) also supports the use of students prior knowledge and backgrounds as a positive element in expanding language learning and enhancing communications.
