defined roles that dictate differences in value and earning potential. Author Linda Hirschmann ("Homeward Bound," American Prospect Online, November 21, 2005) argued that women are acknowledging the choice to
prioritize parenthood over career, while Pamela Stone ("The Rhetoric and Reality of Opting Out, Contexts, Fall, 2007) suggests that even if women have a choice, culturally defined norms and gender
roles that are restrictive lead to the decision in families to place emphasis on the male as breadwinner. The Pro Side of the Argument
The pro side of the argument related by Hirschmann introduces a number of factual components that are not countered by Stone. For example, both Hirschmann and Stone
recognize that women are being educated at an increasing level, and that feminism has provided a foundation for supporting an increasingly qualified female workforce. These points refer to the
conditions in this country that have fostered positions for women in leadership and resulting legislation protecting the rights of women in the workplace are being applied all the time.
The creation of an elite female population prepared for varied careers has been the result of the spread of a feminist ideal. If women can be equal to men
in all other ways, women should be able to lead corporations, create their own businesses and become powerful players in the business world.
