Play is essential during this time and the young child will develop cognitive and socio-emotional skills in the right setting. Any setting needs to offer a lot of directed play activities. Conversation is important, in fact, all social interactions are important for learning. There should also be free time when the young child can explore on their own and discover what interests them. Guidance is also important because it helps a child move from one level of knowledge and skill to the next level. These ideas are supported by various theorists. Piagets stages of cognitive development and Eriksons stages of psychosocial development are helpful for the teacher. Vygotsky also offered many ideas for the young child. These theories inform us of what we might expect of a young child at different age ranges. Piaget identified four periods of cognitive development in the childs life. The first, sensorimotor, begins at birth and continues to about age 24 months. It is called sensorimotor because infants learn through the senses as well as their developing motor skills. During these first two years, emotions also emerge. Emotional bonds are established between the infant and parent or other caregiver.
