Other people may argue that Hemingways works offer us characters who are real and cling to the positive realities in life, thus presenting us with an optimistic look at life. The following paper examines Hemingways novel "The Sun Also Rises" and argues that the work is, while possessing some positive or optimistic elements, is a pessimistic story. Optimism and Pessimism in The Sun Also Rises This particular novel is one wherein we see the phrase or term that is often associated with Hemingways work. In the epigraph there is the statement, "You are all a lost generation." This is a very important element when discussing the optimism and the pessimism of this novel because the lost generation was a generation of people forgotten by society. They were the results of WWI and they were people who were generally left with no direction in their life. The simple descriptive element of a "lost generation" presents the reader with pessimistic imagery, not optimistic. It denotes that this generation will always be lost. They are not called the searching or hopeful generation, but the "lost generation." This sets the stage for a pessimistic story, despite any optimistic elements. One aspect of this story that seems to always surface is that while the characters may begin to find some sense of optimism, they are always drawn back to the fact that no matter how much optimism these characters have, it is futile because they will always find the pessimistic conditions of their life and cling to those.
