and the struggles of a Black woman in radio and television broadcasting. Her ability to overcome these obstacles has helped to define some of the focus on her television
talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and has influenced her choices in terms of philanthropic efforts in recent years. Oprah Winfreys trials began with a troubled childhood. Between the
ages of six and 13, Oprah lived with her mother in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but was molested and ran away (Oprah Winfrey, 2003). She was sent to a juvenile detention
facility, but was denied admission and sent to live with her father in Nashville (Oprah Winfrey, 2003). Oprahs father was a strict disciplinarian, and it was through his direction
and expectations that she straightened herself out (Oprah Winfrey, 2003). Oprah Winfrey pulled herself up through the ranks of television and radio broadcasting, establishing herself as a presence
first in Nashville, and later in Chicago. It was through her experiences as a common news reporter that Oprah saw many of the problems faced by the people of
