Herman Hesses Siddhartha, and Paulo Freires Pedagogy of the Oppressed. Oppression as Seen in Various Works Maya Angelous I Know Why
the Caged Bird Sings is a very emotional, as well as enlightening book. Angelous work is essentially filled with various types and degrees of oppression. In many ways one could
argue, and rightly so, that it is a novel about the life of Angelou as it relates to her ability to rise above the numerous types of oppression she experienced
as a child. With that in mind, there is one moment in the story where Angelou seems to sum up much of the oppressive state of her people, the African
American people. She notes, "our people....It was another lynching, yet another Black man hanging on a tree. One more woman ambushed and raped. A Black boy whipped and maimed" (Angelou,
2002; 131). In this she is clearly summing up some of her particular condition, in relationship to her race and oppression in society. While she has gone through many different
types of oppression, in this illustration she is clearly seeing how her oppression is not unlike the oppression of her people, and in this the novel clearly presents many truths
concerning racial oppression in society through a personal narrative and a social commentary. Like Angelous work, Malcolm Xs life was also one fraught with numerous accounts of oppression. His
