are many elements that seem to contradict one another in the complex culture that involves King Arthur. From the presence of magic along with religion, to an apparent feudal system
that relies on chivalry, there are many opposites within the story. The following paper examines some of these opposites. Opposites in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight One
of the first opposites to examine is that of nature and civilization. The world of King Arthur is presumed to be a world of powerful civilization. The power of the
country coupled with the presence and power of religion speak of a strong civilization that does not indulge in the natural world, but rather seeks to find a higher way
of living. However, the presence of the strange Green Knight plays strongly on nature. He is a wild element, one that is not tamed by civilization and one that essentially
seems to represent nature and wild realities. The Green Knight wore "a beard, as thick and green as a bush" and "in one hand he had a holly-bough, that
is greenest when the groves are bare, and in his other an axe, huge and uncomely, a cruel weapon in fashion, if one would picture it" (Sir Gawain and the
Green Knight). The images in this are very powerful and clearly reflective of the power and presence of nature, especially in the civilized room that possesses Knights of the Round
Table and King Arthur. There is also an opposite in the presence of the colors, those being green and then red and gold. Although the Green Knight possesses strands
and elements of gold, especially within his horse, there is the presence of red gold in Gawains horses gear. His shield "was of bright red, with the pentangle painted thereon
