opposite, and exist or are part of, the opposite families in a kingdom. Romeo and Juliet are also opposite in sex, an obvious opposite. There are powerful issues of love
and hate, pain and pleasure, life and death, and numerous other opposites. The following paper provides a general examination of various opposites within the play "Romeo and Juliet." The paper,
throughout, focuses on how, in perhaps the eyes of Shakespeare, opposites are necessary in life and they provide a balance, regardless of the type of opposite they are.
Opposites One of the most obvious opposites in the story is that which exists between the two feuding families, the Capulets and the Montagues. And to further break down the
families we have Romeo and Juliet, opposites who are powerfully drawn to one another despite or perhaps because of these opposites. In the beginning of the play we have Romeo,
prior to meeting Juliet, discussing the problem of the political struggles that involve love and hate, giving us our first introduction into the foundation of the story, as it relates
to opposites: "Heres much to do with hate, but more with love./ Why, then, O brawling love! O loving hate!/ O any thing, of nothing first create!/ O heavy
lightness! serious vanity!/ Mis-shapen chaos of well-seeming forms!/ Feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire,/ sick health!/ Still-waking sleep, that is not what it is!/ This love feel I, that
feel no love in this./ Dost thou not laugh?" (Shakespeare I i). In this particular section we see Romeo discussing many opposites, presenting us with the confusing nature of
