die peacefully. As the Pope clings to life, but seems to be dying humanely, people nod their heads. He is dying as one is supposed to. There are no extraordinary
measures in place. No one argues. No one is putting him to death either. But in the Schiavo case, there were vehement views about whether or not Terry should be
kept alive by a feeding tube. The issue was heated. Philosopher James Rachels equates allowing someone to die as being the same as euthanasia. While not everyone agrees, it
seems that in the case of Schiavo, some saw her as dying of natural causes. Others saw her as being made to starve to death. In a world where euthanasia
is illegal and end of life issues are considered to be personal, there is a sense that human life is precious. It matters. Even for those who are not religious,
and do not see the concept as a dictate from God, preserving human life seems to always be the right thing to do when questions arise. Still, there is a
debate about the idea of euthanasia. First, what is euthanasia? Sallady (2000) explains: "Active euthanasia describes a situation in which a lethal drug is given with the intent to
bring about death, thus ending suffering" (28). Of course, there is a difference between passive and active euthanasia and many contend that the difference is enormous. The former is
actually providing the means to the end, or helping a person commit suicide. It is sometimes referred to as assisted suicide. It may come in the form of an extra
