in the Early Part of the Nineteenth Century and the War by Which They Forced Her Gates by Peter Ward Fay is an interesting and well written book. The book
focuses in a specific time in Chinese history with events that would lead to the opening up of china. Before the opium wars there was little known of
China and little trade taking place. The book is limited in the focus, there is some history given, but the level of history is focused on the social issues and
maintains a very narrow focus. It may be argued that here are some issues which are lacking in the historical aspects of the book, you sure are some additional historical
context to the value book but it can be argued that the absence of some of his detail does not detract from the books value.
In the context it is known that there was trade taking place prior to the opium war but that this was extremely limited; in 1757 a merchants guild
by the name of Co Hong gained exclusive rights to trading with China, but harsh restrictions were placed on any western traders seeking to do business in the area. These
included restrictions, such as not being allowed to learn Chinese, only being able to live in the area between September and March, and even when they lived there; they were
limited to a small island in Hong Kong and could not bring their families with them. This is rich context against which the changes can be assessed, but with the
