take these opposing views, "Poverty Causes Crime" by George Winslow and "Poverty Does Not Cause Crime" by Eli Lehrer, and argues that Winslows essay is more compelling and convincing. Discussion
The object of these essays is to discuss whether or not poverty causes crime. Winslow takes the position that poverty causes crime, and supports his position. Lehrer, however, doesnt answer
the question directly. He takes the position that neighborhoods generally become more livable as crime rates drop; he argues that reducing crime improves living standards and opportunities even in the
most depressed neighborhoods. But his essay, though interesting, is fatally flawed because he uses a logical fallacy; i.e., the "Straw Man" argument. That is, he avoids the original question and
instead constructs another issue (the "Straw Man") and replies to it. If we read his essay before seeing its title, we would probably call it "How Dropping Crime Rates Affect
Neighborhoods," not "Poverty Does Not Cause Crime." Lehrers opinion, in fact, would seem to be a glimpse of the obvious, and Lehrers tap dance around the real question might indicate
that he has no good answer for it. The students response to these two essays is also likely to depend on where he or she is on the political spectrum.
Liberals will tend to find Winslow compelling while conservatives will probably favor Lehrer. In order to make his case, Winslow makes a clear connection between what we might call the
