of the play we note that all the characters, except one, possess qualities that are less than admirable. We have people who are determined to get rid of Hamlet, people
who are not altogether honest with him, such as his mother, and many others, all of whom are clearly individuals who are out for their own sense of achievement as
it relates to power. The only character, whose presence is important to the story, who does not display these qualities is Ophelia. She is the one true innocent of the
story and the one who experiences the greatest amount of suffering in the play. In many ways Ophelia serves as the foundation for goodness in the story. She is
the only one who purely loves and who does not set out to destroy another. She is an individual who keeps the story from being completely immersed in treachery and
revenge. She is also the one who provides us with the original uncertainty of the story, and the one who offers us a foundation from which we can truly perceive
the tragedy. In addition, without her the tale would not be as heartbreaking or as emotional for it would be a story that only involved royalty and their pursuit of
power. Bearing these conditions in mind we present the following paper which examines the character of Ophelia and her importance to the story. The paper begins with our first introduction
to Ophelia, then discusses her scene with Hamlet, when he brushes her aside, and then finishes with the demise of Ophelia. Through these examinations we shall illustrate how Ophelia is
