common--both women in Shakespearean tragedies, both young, both in love--each is different in their own right. Personalities are completely different but their roles as women in society, and the fate
they were dealt, are quite similar. In comparing and contrasting the characters of Ophelia in Hamlet and Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, a student will want to explore various aspects
of Shakespeares intent as well as how he treats females in general. Also, the particulars of each play must be discussed as each character is put into context. In delving
into the plays themselves, it helps to know a bit about each plot as well as to look at some thematic elements. Hamlet is a play about the main character
named Hamlet who uncovers the murder plot of his deceased father after a visit from his fathers own ghost. Intertwined is a subplot involving the fair Ophelia. In Romeo and
Juliet however, Juliet is a protagonist and so she takes on a greater importance. Still, she is the main love interest of one of the main characters, as is Ophelia.
In fact, Romeo and Juliet involves two young lovers who cannot be together due to their feuding families. In both cases, there is a relationship between the lead male characters
and these women. As far as Ophelias true experience with Hamlet is concerned, the audience "can only speculate about the exact nature of Hamlets relationship to Ophelia before his
fathers death" (Dobranski, 1998, p.233). With Juliet, on the other hand, the exact relationship is known and there is no mystery. Each knows how the other feels. Although Ophelia is
seemingly obsessed, Hamlets feelings are kept hidden, leaving the reader to speculate. Because Ophelia seems to be pursuing Hamlet and the feelings and desires between Romeo and Juliet are mutual,
