One of the things Toyota recognized was that the philosophy of JIT had to be embraced by everyone and incorporated into all aspects of production. The company also realized that plants needed to be organized and arranged in a way that would promote JIT (Institute for Manufacturing 2007). Since its initial introduction, JIT has come to mean producing the expected good with a minimum of waste (Institute for Manufacturing 2007). Waste includes time and labor as well as materials, machinery, equipment, etc. (Institute for Manufacturing 2007). It has also been adopted in the supply chain by many companies. JIT has, in fact, become a management philosophy that emphasizes continuous improvement and waste has incorporated other factors such as space and all resources (Institute for Manufacturing 2007). The key element in JIT is continuous improvement. This fits well into the Total Quality Management and Six Sigma quality philosophies and strategies. The literature reports research that testifies to the benefits of adopting JIT. These include "reducing operating costs, higher quality, greater performance, improved delivery, and increasing flexibility and innovativeness" (Kotelnikov 2008). Companies who adopt JIT usually gain all of these benefits, which gives them a competitive advantage. Adopting the JIT philosophy may not be as easy as it sounds.
