While this concept is being utilized more and more across the nation, it is not as sweeping a model as some might like to think; rather, some pockets of the
country adopt a more liberal approach than others in keeping with the need to place certain limitations upon forging intimate relationships with external systems, both social and organizational (Greene, 2000).
Community policing is one example of how the typical criminal justice agency has converted from a closed to an open system. Nowhere is it more obvious how law enforcement
agencies are reaching out to each community and asking about individual "safety concerns and security needs" (Greene, 2000). One particular community that one might not readily consider in this
equation is the institute of higher education. The role of community policing in higher education reflects a critical component of todays campus environment;
not only has it become necessary to provide this heretofore unwarranted protection but within the ever-growing boundaries of campus issues, it has also become the conduit between a successful academic
