Closed questions are those where there are only a limited number of answers that can be given, this may be as phrasing so that there is a yes no answer, or any questions where there are only a given limited range of answers, these have often been coded in advance ready for analysis (Miles and Huberman. Open questions are the opposite, these are questions that have no preset choices or are not phrased in such as way as to limit choices. Examples of questions that are opened ended questions are those where the answer is not limited by choice or phrasing. These can be initial questions, such as what do you think of the current government, why do you like to drink alcohol?, how do you think children should be disciplined?, or what symptoms do you get with your condition? (with a named condition filled in). All of these are open questions, they are not limiting the answers in the way they are asked and the lack of choices allows the respondent to simply answer in any way they feel appropriate. It is also possible open questions may be follow up question to closed questions, or even other open questions, when one answer is given a follow up open question may be some such as why is that? or what makes you say that?.
