a controversial position, but one which can be supported: that when life becomes too great a burden, an aged person should have the right to die. Discussion This topic
is extremely important for two reasons: it is universal. Despite the fact that we dont like to think about it, we all die. Second, medical science has now made it
possible to greatly prolong life, but without necessarily improving the quality of that life. Most people, when they consider aging at all, undoubtedly see themselves enjoying an active retirement with
few if any health problems. While this is in fact probably the truth for many (we hear a great deal about nursing homes and the horrors therein, but few people
actually end up in one), it cannot be denied that there are many cases in which old age brings crippling illness, and in some cases intense suffering, before the release
of death. If a person is in agony and there is no hope of a cure, it seems both pointless and cruel to force them to linger in pain, based
on some theological idea that only God can end life. We wouldnt allow a dog or cat to suffer; why then do we force humans to do so, when they
are arguably a much more important "creation" (for those who believe in God as a creator) than an animal. Its probably fair to say that most of those who oppose
the right to die do so on religious or ethical grounds, and they have a good point: there are undoubtedly those who would like to hasten the death of a
