of the evil of greed, set against the backdrop of the Sierra Leone civil war. This paper explores the messages of the film as well as the reality of the
situation. Discussion The film: The film tells the story of one mans realization of the evil he is doing, and his redemption. Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a mercenary and
diamond smuggler who ignores the fact that the diamonds - the "blood diamonds" of the title (also known as "conflict diamonds") - are being used to buy arms to fuel
the civil war in Sierra Leone. After becoming involved with Solomon Vandy (Djimon Hounsou), who watches helplessly as rebels kidnap his son, Archer realizes that this monstrous practice cannot continue.
He helps Vandy find his son, who has been turned into a child soldier by the rebels; they are reunited and escape the violence, but his act of humanity costs
Archer his life. The film ends with Archers death but with Vandy and his family reunited and safe in London. But more than one critic objects to the films
simplistic portrayal of black Africans: "Each and every one is either a bloodthirsty mindless killer and pillager or a childlike noble savage and feeble victim" (Ransby). The inescapable conclusion for
