need to be recognised. Communication that take place remotely can be seen as very different from face to face communication. In a personal situation much of the communication will be
non verbal, with facial expressions and body language serving to communicate, as well as tome of voice. Online communication looses all of these aspects, which leaves only words. This constrains
communication and can lead to misunderstanding especially if there are jests or flippant comments. Important aspects may loose the emphasis when communicated in words only. Text editing and emphasis, using
different fonts, bold or underlining may help, but it will not be as adequate. However, this type of communication may also be seen as aiding the development of written skill.
These are high barriers to communication, and there may also be cultural differences that are not recognised in the way communication takes place. There are also other advantages, where the
barriers are overcome there is an ability for wider exposure to different cultures and a higher level of peer learning to take place. In a face to face scenario there
may be first impressions which are inaccurate and also pre-existing prejudices may influence our perceptions. Online we cannot see our peers, and therefore, these perceptions cannot be formed and become
barriers. It is also possible to have students that spread over wide distances, for example in different countries or different continents, this also increases exposure, and increases peer learning in
