strip us of everything that is culturally and philosophically relevant. As technology become a more and more prevalent aspect of our lives it even has the potential to strip
us of our very identity! The advent of the digital world has perpetuated this possibility as no other technological invention has. The
complexity of digital crime has increased step by step with the complexity of digital information. Identity theft is one of the most concerning of the many manifestations of digital
crime. Identity theft is a predatory crime just as are crimes like assault and rape. In predatory crime he criminal chooses a victim that is susceptible. The
rapist chooses a woman, or in some instances a man, that he or she feels that they can overcome. The predator that wants to profit from someone elses credit
history, their academic or professional background, etc., chooses as his victim someone that is careless with their personal information, someone that keeps his or her social security number written on
various documents, someone that throws all mail into the trash without securing vital information, someone that uses ATM machines without regard to who is around and watching. Identity theft
predators can, however, choose a victim without ever having any personal interaction with that victim. That ability is given to them by the advent of digital technology.
