paper discusses one thing a reader can learn from Youngs book. Discussion There are a number of revelations in the book, but the one that may be of the greatest
importance (though this is subjective) is this: "Kazan ... shattered clich?s and stereotypes. Many actors have done their best work in his films. But he didnt just help them give
better performances. He changed the nature of film acting" (Young, 1999, p. 14). All those who think acting is nothing but a bunch of over-paid fools running around in great
locations should be forced to try their hand at performing. Acting is not a job, or a technique; it is referred to as a "craft," and theres a reason for
that. It is the actors job to convince the audience that what they are seeing is a real person reacting to actual events. Whether or not the setting is science
fiction and therefore fantastic, or utterly real, the goal is the same: the audience has to believe what theyre seeing. That is, the story may be set on the planet
Twylo in the far future, but unless the audience believes that the characters who have traveled to Twylo are real, the film will be a disaster. Everybody knows of actors
who have made a great living playing themselves-John Wayne comes to mind-but theyre rare. Most actors try to create a persona that they inhabit and bring to life. In order
to make such a thing believable, its necessary for the actor to do more than spout lines. He or she has to somehow create a real character, a person, separate
