during the McCarthy witch-hunts. In the 1950s, America went off the rails. In the wake of World War II, the U.S. and U.S.S.R., which had been allies, began to square
off at each other, entering into the forty-year struggle known as the Cold War. As Americans began to realize that they were facing a threat from one of the largest
Communist nations in the world (though how real that threat really was is open to argument), they began to become fearful. Soon enough a real "red scare" swept the country,
and Americans became afraid that the country was being infiltrated by Communist spies and sympathizers bent on delivering the nation into Communist hands. This fanciful theory was espoused in particular
by Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy, who became involved with the House Un-American Activities Committee, which had been created to ferret out the "reds" in the U.S. government. As its name
implies, the HUAC was a House committee but McCarthy soon became the driving force behind it, and his name was synonymous with the committees activities. In fact, he gave his
name to the phenomenon: McCarthyism. The word is not flattering; it refers to baseless hunts for fictional wrong-doers. Many of those "investigated" for being Communists were from Hollywood. Because
so many producers and directors were from Europe, having fled the Nazis, it was easy for McCarthy to convince others in Congress, as well as the American people, that the
place was a hotbed of Communist activity. The actual number of Communists, if any, was probably extremely low, but at the height of the phenomenon, simply the accusation was enough
