fled in terror from the image of a moving train presented at the Lumiere Brothers cinematic premiere in Paris on December 28, 1895 (Nova Online http:// www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/specialfx/effects/history.html). Parisian audiences
had obviously matured in the short time between this premiere and the introduction of Melies illusory "tricks", which later became known as "special effects", as had the film industry itself,

the industry did, indeed, survive, as well as George Melies concept of filmed illusion. Over the next century this industry was to undergo a massive amount of change as
technology advanced and first sound, then color was added to feature films. As evidenced by Melies early filmed magicians tricks, effects achieved by splicing the film or through the
simple actions of stopping and starting the camera at carefully timed intervals, special effects have played a large part in the film industry since its initial birth. It wasnt
